How to Use Connexx 8.3 Smart Optimizer
Rebecca Herbig Au.D.
Building upon the current Data Logging feature, the new Smart Optimizer feature in Connexx makes recommendation for fitting modifications based on logged data. This intuitive solution simplifies and speeds up hearing aid fine tuning for the hearing care professional, and ensures that fittings are individualized according to the wearer’s real world environment and wearing patterns.
Data logging has proven to be a valuable tool for hearing care professionals during patient follow-up appointment. How-ever, it has mainly been an information gathering tool. The interpretation of the data, as well as necessary remedial action, have been left up the hearing care professional. With Smart Optimizer, we make the fine tuning process more efficient. Smart Optimizer utilizes data collected by Data Logging, including usage of volume control in different programs, program usage or lack of usage, patient’s acoustic environment, and wear time. This information is analyzed together to make appropriate fine tuning and counseling recommendations in follow-up fittings.
The new Smart Optimizer feature can be found on the bottom left portion of the Data Logging page under the Personalization tab. Check the Enable box to see Smart Optimizer recommendations. For hearing care professionals who may be viewing the screen together with the patient and does not want to show this feature during the consulation, leave the box unchecked.
Depending on the patient usage, Smart Optimizer will list detected potential problems and make appropriate fitting and counseling recommendations. If there are multiple problems detected, use the scroll bar to the right to review them all.
For each problem detected by the Smart Optimizer, it indicates with red and/or blue squares whether the problem affects one or both ears. After the problem description, it also indicates the number of programs affected by the problem. Note that Smart Optimizer does not simply show problematic areas which require attention, it also makes recommendations to correct the problem, either via fine tuning, or topics for discussion with the patient. For many detected problems, hearing care professionals can even directly click Apply to execute the recommended
solution. As each of these detected problems are addressed, click Hide to remove them from the list. Some of problems alerted by Smart Optimizer include:
- Usage times: Differing usage times detected in the two hearing aids, low-usage, hearing aids never turned off
- Hearing aid programs: program not used, not used sufficiently, sub-optimal program order
- Gain related problems: inadequate acoustic coupling, absent critical gain measurement, insufficient gain reserve, patient consistently turning volume up/down, etc.
Designed for efficient follow-up finetuning appointments, the Data Logging page with Smart Optimizer in Connexx is the perfect place for hearing care professionals to start the conversation with the patient. As such, it is also recommended to apply all the Smart Optimizer recommendations before making any fitting changes elsewhere. For the same reason, the Data Logging page is the default page shown in Connexx when reading out attached hearing aids during a follow-up appointment. If this is not desired, the hearing care professional can
change this setting in the Connexx Preferences menu under Workflow. Smart Optimzer can be a similar asset when used with sDemo devices since any fine tuning adjustments made with sDemo devices can be easily copied over to the purchased hearing aids.
