A natural sounding own voice thanks to Own Voice Processing

In a series of expert talks at EUHA 2017, several of our developers in Germany highlight advantages of the new Signia Nx platform. Today's topic: The importance of a natural sounding own voice .

In his talk at EUHA 2017, Sebastian Best, Head of R&D Audiology Experts, introduced the latest development in Signia hearing aids. For the first time with the new Signia Nx platform’s Own Voice Processing (OVP), hearing aids deliver a more natural sounding own voice, which may encourage the wearer to engage in more social interactions.

It’s a well-known situation: People are surprised when they hear a recording of their own voice for the first time. Many ask: “Is that really me?” Hearing Care Professionals experience a similar reaction from their clients, especially during a first fitting. There is a lot at stake: At that moment, the sound of the own voice serves as a reference for wearers to judge whether the hearing aids sound natural to them or not. Confidence plays an important part in social interaction; the more familiar the wearer’s own voice sounds, the lower the barrier is to interact naturally with other people.

Modern hearing aid systems can determine the wearer’s acoustic environment at ever more accuracy. But while conventional hearing aids can only recognize speech in general, the new Signia Nx platform goes much further. It can identify the wearer’s own voice from all other voices via unique characteristics of the own voice – what Sebastian Best calls its “acoustic DNA” – to then process it completely independently from all other sounds, including all other voices.

The result of this revolutionary OVP technology is an improved spontaneous acceptance of own voice by 75% of dissatisfied hearing aid wearers* as they benefit from better speech understanding and communication behavior thanks to the natural sound of Signia Nx.
